Taking a Breath

In the spirit of our "Breather Assignment," take a look at the following:

"Money" RA p. 330
and "From Seven Floors Up" RA p.332

These selections are examples of artwork (poetry) that have come directly out of social and economic circumstance, and seek to, in some way, shed light on that human experience.

Think about these poems, reference them as you post answering the following questions:

How do politics impact art?
Consider your own magazine topic, can you think of artistic products connected to it?

  2. From Seven Floors Up reminds me of the days my brother and I were in the jewelry business. We would make our purchases in downtown Los Angeles. In our travels through the sidewalk concrete jungle known as "gold district", we encountered many homeless people. Pershing Square, a downtown park the size of city block, would be filled with the homeless sleeping on the grass or just hanging out. We often commented to each other about the irony that so much wealth could be surrounded by some much poverty. I remember this one women, obese, shoeless, and filthy "living" on the sidewalk. She was always there each time we passed lying as if she was unable to stand and babbling away to no one. Somehow these people don't mind. They just delight in the day and the simple things. There are times when that sound so inviting.
